  1. The similarities that I noticed between this speech and Pericles’ funeral oration are the basic ideas. These ideas are to keep fighting for yourself, your country, and to make the death of the soldiers lost worth it.

  2. 1. There are two similarities I noticed between Pericles’ Funeral Oration and the Gettysburg Address. One of them is how they both talked about those who dedicated their lives so that nation could win the war and how it is “proper” or the right thing to do that. The other thing they both discussed was about the law. This law said that all men are created equal and everyone should have equal justice. Overall, I think the main ideas of each speech were somewhat similar.

  3. 1. I noticed that there were many similarities between Lincoln’s speech and Pericles’. One of the main similarities is that they are both war funeral speeches. Another similarity is that both start by referring to the people that helped to found both civilizations. Both speeches then go on to praise the idea of democracy and how it helped both nations flourish. They both speak about how the people of both nations are equal under the law and are created equal.
Another similarity is that both speakers believe that it is hard to speak on this occasion because the actions of the fallen were so great. They believe it is hard to live up to the actions performed by the deceased. Finally both speakers ask the people gathered to carry on with the work that the dead were doing and to help their great nations. Both Pericles and Lincoln both believe that the actions of the fallen men will have far more power than the words they have spoken.

  4. 1. I think one of the biggest similarities between the two speeches, is that they both are spoken after a great battle that will long be remembered. So, therefore they have the same ideas written into the speech. This includes some history and the heroic effort of those who died. Last, they both wrote that they gave their all for the country, and died honorably. I think these speeches are almost alike in the content, which makes the more enjoyable when you read them both.

  5. 1.) What similarities do you notice between Pericles’ speech and Lincoln’s?
The first comparison between the two speeches would be that they were both given while their countries were at war. Pericles’ Funeral Oration was presented during the Peloponnesian War while the Gettysburg Address was given during the Civil War.
Secondly, Pericles’ speech, like Lincoln’s, begins with an acknowledgment of their ancestors: “I shall begin with our ancestors: it is both just and proper that they should have the honour of the first mention on an occasion like the present.”
Lincoln, like Pericles, addresses the difficulties faced by a speaker on such an occasion, “…we cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot hallow this ground…The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here.” And Pericles argues that “reputations of many brave men” should “not be imperiled in the mouth of a single individual.”
Finally, Lincoln, and Pericles, contrasts the effectiveness of words and actions, “The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract…The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here.”
The two speeches also praise their commitment to democracy, their soldiers sacrifices for their country and the strength they possess.

  6. Lincoln

The similarities I notice between Pericles’ and Lincoln’s speeches are the fact that they were both trying to calm a nation after a battle. They were also showing why the people fought for their country and the idea of democracy. Both speeches acknowledge their predecessors. They also talk about the difficulties they had to face in making their speeches. Both Pericles and Lincoln wanted it to be known that what should be remembered is not the speech, but why the speech was being told. They both realize it isn’t about them, but it’s about the soldiers and their families and the nation. They both tried to create hope for the rest of the citizens. I really think that Lincoln had Pericles’ speech in mind when he wrote the Gettysburg Address.

  7. The similarities between the two speechs are they both talk about the ones that they have lost in combat.

  8. 1) These two speeches are quite similar for a few reasons that jump out at me right away.
One is that in the Gettysburg Address it is first stated that all men are created equal and later goes on to say that “we are engaged in a civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so decidated, can long endure.” I believe that in the Pericles Oration the same thing is said while he talks about the nation’s democracy and strength (and as much as they have) but how they still started to sort of unraval during their war.
Another similarity I noticed is how in both speeches the speakers talk about the bravery, integrity, and courage served by all participants in each war whether or not their lives were taken.
Lastly in Pericles’ Oration, Pericles says that their military opens their city to the world. In a way, Lincoln says the same thing when he first begins to talk about the war and how the nation is being tested on how it will live.

  9. Response 1-The similarities between Lincoln’s speech and Pericles’ are that they both honor the dead and living. Both say that they should honor those who died in battle and also that they can both endure through the battle. Lincoln and Pericles also said that the nations which they live in are democratic meaning for the people, by the people, and of the people. Those are the similarities I found in Lincoln’s speech and Pericles’ speech.

    Comment by Hayley H — September 1, 2009 @ 09:54

  10. 1. There were many similarities between Lincoln’s address and Pericles oration. The first one I found though, was the purposes of the speech. Both speeches had the purpose of honoring those brave citizens who died in battle, and to reinforce that there was unfinished work to do. As Lincoln stated as, “It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced.” And also as Pericles stated, “So died these men as becomes Athenians. You, their survivors, must determine to have as unaltering a resolution in the field, though you may pray that it may have a happier outcome”
Another similarity I noticed is both speeches start off by honoring those who came before them, and how those ancestors contributed to their present day life. Pericles started his speech by stating “I shall begin with our ancestors: it is both just and proper that they should have the honour of the first mention on an occasion like the present.” As well as Lincoln stated, “Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.”
I believe that both speakers spend a decent amount of time on the ones who have past. Whether they state that they are honorable, or how brave the act they perofrmed was. For example, “The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here,” said Lincoln. Also, “Thus choosing to die resisting, rather than to live submitting, they fled only from dishonour, but met danger face to face, and after one brief moment, while at the summit of their fortune, escaped, not from their fear, but from their glory.”
Finally, the last similarity I found is how both men believe, in their opinion, that their government is forever. Both governments are a democracy, and both men are proud of ther governments achievments. Pericles stated, “Our constitution does not copy the laws of neighbouring states; we are rather a pattern to others than imitators ourselves. Its administration favours the many instead of the few; this is why it is called a democracy. If we look to the laws, they afford equal justice to all in their private differences;” Lincolns was also shown through his words, “and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

  11. Pericles’ Funeral Oration and the Gettysburg Address are similar in many ways. One way is that both speeches pay tribute to men who have fought and died for their country/city. Both speeches are given by important figures. The president, Abraham Lincoln, and Pericles, an Athenian statesman. Also, both men glorify their own city/country and explain how the sacrifices make it better. They tell how their government is free and gives rights and equal opportunities to everyone. Also, they both say that the dead must be honored and their unfinished work taken care of so that they didn’t die in vain.
They say that in future fights, there must not be cowardice, or the dead men’s memories and courage will be dishonored.

  13. #1 Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address and Pericles’ Funeral Oration have some similarities probably because Lincoln used Pericles’ as an influence. Knowing that both speeches were made for the same reasons. Both of these speeches begin with remembering their ancestors. Another similarity would be that both speakers wanted to put hope out for the mourners, ”For these reasons I shall not commiserate with those parents of the dead… Instead I shall try to comfort them.” (Pericles). And like Pericles, Lincoln discussed how hard it was to make a speech in his position and he differs the capability of words and deeds, “The brave men, living and dead, who struggle here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract… The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here.” (Lincoln).

  14. 1. There were many similarties between Licoln’s and Pericles’ speeches. I noticed that the main topic in both of them was the people that had died in war. Both said how those who had fallen and even those who had surived should never be forgotten because what they did was so courageous and brave, that their actions should live on forever.
Also, they both dicuss those before them who had made their countries great. Pericles’ discusses the imporatance of all their ancestors while Lincoln talks about our fathers who made this continent what it is today.
Another thing similar between the two is that all men are created equal. At the time, women and slaves were not free in either country. The statement that all men are created equal is not always interperated correctly, but both places still continue to believe that all men were created equal.

  15. 1. What similarities do you notice between Pericles’ speech and Lincoln’s? Both of these speeches honor the ones who came before them. In Pericles he tells the Athenians to honor their ancestors for passing down their traditions. In The Gettysburg Address, Lincoln says, “our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.” In addition, these speeches are presented to honor the dead men that fought in the war. In The Gettysburg Address Lincoln declares, “We are met on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live.” He is honoring the dead. Pericle says, “I should have thought that the worth which had displayed itself in deeds would be sufficiently rewarded by honors also shown by deeds; such as you now see in this funeral prepared at the people’s cost. And I could have wished that the reputations of many brave men were not to be imperiled in the mouth of a single individual.” Both of these lines tell you what the funeral is for, to honor the dead men. The two addresses also say that the ground that the men that have died on is sacred. Lincoln states, “We cannot dedicate—we cannot consecrate—we cannot hallow—this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it.” Pericle talks about throughout the whole speech but some lines are more direct to saying the ground of these men is sacred. He said, “And for a sepulchre, not so much that in which their bones have been deposited, but that noblest of shrines wherein their glory is laid up to be eternally remembered upon every occasion on which deed or story shall call for its commemoration.”

  16. Lincoln: 1. What similarities do you notice between Pericles’ speech and Lincoln’s?

The purpose of both Pericles’ and Lincoln’s speech was to honor those who died in battle. Also, they were similar because both of them had to install hope into the mourners. Another thing is that the both start speaking of their ancestors, and how the3 have inspired present day situation. Pericles said “I shall begin with our ancestors: it is both just and proper that they should have the honor of the first mention on an occasion like the present.” Lincoln said, “Our fore fathers brought on this continent, a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.”
These are the similarities between Pericles’ speech and Lincoln’s.

  17. The Gettysburg Address

    1. Both of the speeches took place right after a big war. Also, I think that both speeches were meant to let people remember that the men that died did not die in vain. That they died for a good purpose and that was their country.

    ————————————————–
P.S. This summer I actually went on a Cival War battlefield trip with my family and we actually stopped in Gettysburg. So I got to see all of the battlefeilds of the Battle of Gettysburg and I got to go inside of the Gettysburg war museum and read all about Abe Lincoln and the Gettysburg Address. It was really cool!

  18. I found many similarities in the two speeches. First i noticed that both speeches were made from a result of soldiers lost in war. Also the speeches speak of how wonderful the country they live in is, and how they respect this. Both men, Pericle and Lincoln, were well respected men, and they were wise and loved their country. Both of the men giving the speech were asking their people to recognize the courage of the brave men that fought to preserve the great country and the rights and freedom they have.

  19. Both Lincoln’s and Pericles’ speeches are similar because they were both delivered to remember and honor those troops who had died in battle. In Lincoln’s case, he is honoring those who had fallen in the Battle of Gettysburg, while Pericles was honoring those who had fallen in the Peloponnesian War. Another similarity that I see between the two speeches is that they are both recognizing their state’s commitment to the democracy. Also, they both discuss that everyone is equal under the law and that both of the places are so dedicated to their home. Lastly, both Pericles and Lincoln mention how difficult for them it was to address the occasion.

  20. 1. The subject of Pericles and Lincoln’s speeches is remembering the accomplishments of those who have died in war. They both ask the people to continue fighting for and believing in what their ancestors fought for. They also talk about how the soldiers who have fallen recently made similar sacrifices to their ancestors and how defending democracy is an ongoing battle.

    Comment by Kathryn H.D. — September 3, 2009 @ 18:26

  21. 1. What similarities do you notice between Pericles’ speech and Lincoln’s?

I think that Pericles’ speech and Lincoln’s speech were very similar. I think that in a way the Gettysburg Address was a remake of Pericles’ Funeral Oration. I think in both speech they are talking about there ancestors that were on the land where they stand now. They talked about how their ancestors developed how they are thinking now. Most of our ideas came from customs and that how we got them.
Also, what is similar is that they are honoring people that have past away in war. I think Pericles’ speech goes into a lot more detail and explains how people feel and how they react. People are considered heroes after dying at war in the Athens, but in the United States it’s just the noble thing to do. Serve your country. You will get appreciated, but not as much as the Athenians would appreciate you.

  22. Although Lincoln’s speech was given almost two and a half milleniums after Pericles’, they still had many similarities. While the Peloponessian War and the American Civil was both consisted over many battles over completely different issues, they were very much the same in many ways. The two men who wrote the speeches are also very unalike, they managed to mention many of the same things in their speeches.
Pericles and Lincoln were both very respectable, conspicious politicians who were given a big oppurtunity. They took it and chose to write their own speech and then present it to many people from theeir country or city. Their speeches where very comforting to those who were mourning and gve respect to those who they were mourning over.
‘The Gettysburg Address’ and ‘Pericles’ Funeral Oration’ both begin by mentioning the people who estabished their country or city, their ancestors. Then, they carry on to speak about the war that has taken place, that also is the reason they were all gathered at the ceremony in the first place. They also gave the soldiers, both fallen and alive, much respect.
Finally, they continue on to say that their city or country needs to remain strong and remember what the soldiers did. They need to remember what they were fighting for, and why they sacrificed their lives. But, most importantly, they must remember that no soldier “died in vain.”

  23. Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address and Pericles’ Funeral Oration are very similar. Both speeches were given to honor the people who died while fighting in the war and the survivors. The Funeral Oration showed the greatness of Athens and explained how good a democracy is, while the Gettysburg Address dedicated a monument as a final resting place for the men who died fighting. It also spoke of the unfinished work that still needs to be done. Both Pericles and Lincoln also talk about the people that came before them and how they have inspired others. By reading both of these speeches, you see that history is something that everybody has learned from. Lincoln’s speech was basically a shorter and more modern version of Pericles’. Knowing this, we understand that in some ways, the way we live now is just like living in 400 BC. This shows that our form of government is a great idea, and its not going to disappear anytime in the future.

  24. Gettysburg Address
    1. Like the Gettysburg Address, Pericles’ Funeral Oration was given after a war of great importance. Also, like in the Gettysburg Address, Pericles’ said that the country will not exclude foreigners, “We throw open our city to the world, and never by alien acts exclude foreigners from any opportunity of learning or observing, although the eyes of an enemy may occasionally profit by our liberality” and the Gettysburg address said, that “all men are created equal” saying that no person or culture is better than anyone or any culture. Also, both of them talk about honoring ancestors and warriors that have fought or contributed to the building of the community. These people are important to the history of their society. They also both talk about being a democracy, and having people in charge of the country instead of one ruler with all of the power.

    Comment by Natalie S — September 5, 2009 @ 21:08

  25. 1. Lincoln says that though we don’t know what happened to each individual man we know what they were fighting for and that is similar to what Pericles is saying.

  26. Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address and Pericles’ address to the Athenians seek to honor those who have died for their country and encourage the living to be proud of their country going forward. Both want everyone to understand that those who died have not died for no good reason. Both remind the living to be dedicated to the “unfinished work” of the dead. For Lincoln, it was winning the Civil War and for Pericles, it was making Athens a great power in the world. Both men gave a speech to heal the loss felt by those living and to encourage support for the future.

  27. After reading both the Gettysburg Address and Pericles Funeral Oration Speech, I noticed many similarities between the two.
In both of the speeches, they mention a thanks to those who came before us for making the way easier. For making it a whole lot easier for us in our lifetime.
Second, a big part of both speeches was to honor thos who had fallen before us. Those who gave their lives for us, and to see change in our world.
Another point that was in both speeches was that in return for the men and women who died for us, we should continue to do great things for our country.
In my opinion, the biggest point that both speeches stressed was the importantance of democracy. That everyone should be treated equally. And that the people should have a huge part in what goes on in the country, and also in decision making.
The last similarity between the two speeches is that they both were given very close to a period of time where a war was taking place.

  28. Lincoln: #1

After reading both Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address and Pericles’ Funeral Oration I saw a few similarities between them. One similarity was in The Gettysburg Address Lincoln talked much about commemorating those who had fought in the civil war. He dedicated a final resting place for them. In Pericles’ Funeral Oration he talked about remembering the great Athenians who had died for their country.

Both speeches began talking about how their ancestors influenced present day situations. As said in Pericles’ Funeral Oration, “I shall begin with our ancestors: it is both just and proper that they should have the honour of the first mention on an occasion like the present.” In the Gettysburg Address, “Our fore fathers brought on this continent, a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.”

The purpose of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address was very similar to Pericles’ speech. Its purpose was to dedicate a final resting place for those who had died fighting in the Civil War. Lincoln said himself, “It is for us the living rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who have sought here have thus far so nobly advanced.” He was trying to reinforce the fact that there is much unfinished work to do. Likewise, Pericles says that happiness is the reward or “fruit of freedom of valour”, and he warns “never decline the dangers of war.” He is saying that we must continue to fight for freedom so that the lives that have been lost were not in vain.

I think that the similarities of the speeches are that each speech is written to commemorate those who sacrificed their lives in war and to remember how great it is to have a democracy.

  29. 1. There are many similarities between Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address and Pericle’s funeral oration. Lincoln’s speech, like Pericle’s, begins with mentioning the greatness of the founding fathers and success of their predecessors. Also, Lincoln praises the uniqueness of their governments, and their commitment to their governments. Also, in the Gettysburg Address, Lincoln also talks about the difficulties faced when speaking in a difficult situation like both of them had to speak in. In the end, Lincoln tries torally the troops, just as Pericles did. Only, Lincoln was speaking for the end of war and Pericles was kind of recruiting soldiers. Finally, Lincoln, like Pericles, talks about how his speech should not be about himself, but it should be about remembering those who died and what they died fighting for. In the end they were very similar speeches.
